MyMedicare News

Children under 14 years are now eligible to register for MyMedicare.  MyMedicare is a free and voluntary patient registration model which formalises the relationship between patients, their general practice, GP and the primary care team with the aim of improving continuity of care and health outcomes.

A child under 14 years can be registered for MyMedicare by a parent of guardian.  To register a child:

  • They must be on the same Medicare card as the registering parent of guardian.
  • They can only be registered with one general practice at a time and with one preferred GP.

The registering parent or guardian will have access to view and edit MyMedicare registration information for the child using Medicare online services.

More details can be found at Register for MyMedicare - Medicare online account - Services Australia.

General Practice in Aged Care (GPACI) program guidelines

The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive program guidelines have been updated.

The guidelines provide clear guidance to general practices and primary care providers who voluntarily register in MyMedicare to access the GPACI, including advice on the service requirements, payments and assessments.

Changes include removing reference to Aboriginal Health Workers and some clarification to language from Services Australia. The updated guidelines can be found here:  General Practice in Aged Care Incentive program guidelines 2024 | Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.

Backdating GPACI Patient Registrations

The Department of Health and Aged Care is allowing Practices to backdate their MyMedicare registered patients’ GPACI registration so that the care provided since 1 July 2024 can be accurately captured in the GPACI eligibility assessment.

Background

The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI) commenced on 1 July 2024. It replaced the General Practitioner Aged Care Access Incentive (GP ACAI) for Provider Incentives Program (PIP).

Eligibility for the first quarter (July – September 2024) was assessed and payments were processed in October 2024.

Registration errors

Some GPs and Practices provided GPACI-eligible services but didn’t select the GPACI Indicator or a Responsible Provider for their eligible MyMedicare registered patients, or selected the GPACI Indicator and Responsible Provider after the eligible services had already been delivered.
This made them ineligible for GPACI payments. This may also have an effect on future payments as a total of 10 eligible services need to be delivered over the 12-month care period for practices and providers to be eligible for the quarter four payment.

To acknowledge challenges of the transition from GP ACAI to GPACI for the sector, and to ensure practices and providers who delivered GPACI-eligible services are not missing out, for a limited time the department is allowing practices to backdate their patients’ GPACI registration in the system.

Please note practices must backdate their patients’ GPACI registration date for any patients impacted by this error by 31 March 2025.

How

Services Australia has provided detailed instructions, here, which include the criteria that needs to be met when selecting the patient’s GPACI registration date.

When

During each quarterly assessment, the previous three quarters are also reassessed. After practices have backdated their patients’ GPACI registration, if the next quarterly reassessment process determines they met all the eligibility criteria, practices and providers will be assessed as having an underpayment and will get a GPACI payment for the relevant assessment period/s.

Start the New Year Safe and Aware

The holiday period has ended, and we commence 2025 in a very warm summer for Western Australia. WA is still experiencing its high-risk period with threats of heatwaves, fires, floods and storms impacting the state.

Begin the year by supporting patients and your practice to start the year informed about where to go to for information and how to keep safe in the new year.

Who is at risk?

  • Patients with asthma or respiratory illnesses.
  • Children, older people, pregnant women, people experiencing homelessness and those living with a disability.
  • Patients living with chronic conditions and/or on multiple medications.
  • Patients that are unable to respond due to dementia, disability, or other factors.
  • Those impacted by environmental factors e.g., outdoor workers.
  • Aboriginal population living in remote areas.

How can general practice assist?

Encourage patients at most risk to prepare and plan:
  • Ensure they understand where to go for reliable and up to date information (emergency WA),
  • Have sufficient medications on hand leading into the holiday period,
  • Review care plans for patients with asthma or respiratory conditions

Here are 6 essential links that will help you to move into the new year better prepared:

1. Road Travel – look before you leave. Check to make sure roads are open and be aware of traffic hazards ahead of leaving:
2. Emergency WA – save this site on your phone and desktop to always be aware of new and emerging concerns in your area:
  • Government of Western Australia - Emergency WA
  • Download the free Emergency WA app and receive updates and warnings straight to your phone. Head to an app store and search "Emergency WA" to get immediate access.
3. Australian Warning System – learn about the new Australian warning system so you know when to prepare, stay or go during emergencies:
4. Heatwaves – learn about the risk of heat to yourself and family from the Department of Heath:
5. Bushfires – learn about bushfires and complete a bushfire plan using the quick and simple templates available through Department of Fire and Emergency Services:
6. Cyclones and Storms – read about cyclones and storms and learn about how you can prevent, prepare, respond and recover from cyclones and storms:

New prescribing code now in effect

Amendments to the Medicines and Poisons Regulations 2016 and the Schedule 8 Prescribing Code came into effect on the 12 December 2024 which impact the prescribing and dispensing of monitored medicines and the use of ScriptCheckWA.

Under the new code, a monitored medicine includes those in schedule 8 and certain schedule 4 medicines such as benzodiazepines. The Schedule 8 Medicines Prescribing Code has been renamed to the Monitored Medicines Prescribing Code to reflect its expanded scope, now encompassing Schedule 4 (S4) Monitored Medicines.

From the 12 June 2025, registration with ScriptCheckWA will be mandatory for prescribers and pharmacists. Under Regulation 22A of the Medicines and Poisons Regulation 2016, prior to prescribing, dispensing, or supplying a Monitored Medicine, a health professional must register with ScriptCheckWA.

The use of ScriptCheckWA is strongly recommended to assist in the safe prescribing of medicines known to have a higher risk of dependence and diversion. ScriptCheckWA provides real time information that can inform risk assessments that prescribers are required to undertake in circumstances defined by section 8.5 of Monitored Medicines Prescribing Code.

A summary of all the key amendments that impact health practitioners has been published by the WA Department of Health.

Information about how to register for ScriptCheckWA, requirements, and learning modules can be accessed also on the WA Department of Health real time prescription monitoring webpage.

National recall - Coloplast urology catheter products

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has recalled certain urology products due to the discovery of potential damage to the packaging, compromising the sterility of the product.

There is a potential risk of infection for patients in which these products have been used.

The recall concerns product families from the interventional urology portfolio.

Affected product families include foley catheters, prostatic catheters, urinary diversion devices, neoplex urethral catheters without balloon, urethral bougies, urodynamic catheters, percutaneous nephrostomy catheters, Supra-pubic drainage set, surgical drainage devices.

The manufacturer of the product has notified customers and advised that the company that sterilises these products cannot guarantee the integrity of the sterile packaging and is now removing the products from the market as a precaution.

A patient information sheet is available about the recall and advises contact with their GP or healthdirect on 1800 022 222 if they have any concerns or experience any signs that might suggest they have an infection.

Has your patient served in the defence forces? The Veterans' Health Check can help you to help them stay well

Former members of the Australian Defence Force are most at risk of mental and physical health issues in the early years after they move into civilian life. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) fully funds the Veterans’ Health Check program, which provides a comprehensive health assessment once a year for five years, once they’ve transitioned from the military.

They have created resources to make it easy for busy GPs to undertake this annual assessment and seek payment for their time.

Mpox outbreak in Western Australia

Mpox cases in WA continue to occur with increasingly large numbers of anonymous contacts of mpox cases not able to be identified through contact tracing.

Department of Health would like to advise clinicians to have a low threshold to test for mpox and other sexually transmitted infections in sexually active people with clinically compatible symptoms. Currently, Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at highest risk of mpox.

All health care providers should be encouraging mpox vaccination for eligible patients.

Free vaccination is available for all eligible people at risk.
